This class offers the opportunity to learn the traditional academic approach to realistic life drawing. It comprises of individual instruction in a group drawing setting. The themes of the class focus on proportion, line, contour, value, and gesture. Beginning students will be shown the sight-size method of drawing. The Comparative drawing method will be demonstrated to more advanced students as necessary. Students will work from short gesture studies, single day poses, and multi-day poses. This class is open to students of all levels of ability.

Monday Mini-Atelier - 2 sessions

This program follows the same curriculum as our normal full time program and is designed for students who are unable to attend the full time Atelier. The Monday Mini-Atelier will feature a model in the morning from 9:00am-12:00pm followed by individual cubicle work on cast drawings and paintings in the afternoon. Beginners will progress from charcoal drawing to grisaille painting depending on experience, with mastery of charcoal drawing being the preliminary requirement. This is a great way to further your development in the classical realism style.
The Fundamentals of Composition Workshop

This workshop is for anyone who would like to take their art to the next level by gaining a deeper understanding of the elements and principles behind composition. A slide discussion of works by the Old Masters as well as examples of Mike's personal creation process is included.
Oct. 10th Lecture: The Elements and Principals of Composition:
This lecture will address the principals of balance, proportion, harmony and contrast, as well as the importance of repetition and movement for creating a center of interest.
Oct. 17th Lecture: The Procedure of Composition:
This lecture will reveal the methodology of developing a painting from idea to finish; from thumb-nail sketches to black and white and color studies. The lecture will address how to best organize one's thoughts and feelings into a pictorial image.

Alla Prima Portrait Workshop

This class will teach you how to paint a portrait using the "Alla Prima" method.
The first day of this workshop will include a live demonstration, a lunch break, followed by painting time plus individual instruction and critique. The second day of this workshop will include painting time, a lunch break, followed by final individual critiques.

This is a special outdoor landscape workshop on location at the Lincoln Park North Pond in Chicago, IL. If you have ever had the desire to paint beautiful landscapes, but were unsure how to begin, this class is for you. The first day of this workshop will include a demonstration painting on location, a lunch break, followed by painting time. The following two days will include painting time plus individual instruction and critique by a talented instructor.
Supplies recommended:
Outdoor easel or pochade box
9" x 12" or smaller cavas board or canvas
Oil colors of your preference (good to include a cadmium yellow, blue ultramarine, cadmium red, alizarine crimson, ivory black, raw umber, and titanium or flake white)
Oil brushes of various size
Turpenoid/ mineral spirit in portable container
Rag or roll of paper towel
A hat
On-going enrollment accepted after start dates. Minimum registration required to run course. Dates are subject to change with notice to students. Supply list available upon registration.
